The "Ballon d'Or", referred to as the European Footballer of the Year award, was an annual association football award. It was presented to the player who had been considered to have performed the best over the previous calendar year.

Since 2010, the Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year award have been merged. The world’s best player will be awarded the FIFA Ballon d'Or each year.

The award was conceived by France Football's chief magazine writer Gabriel Hanot, who asked his colleagues to vote for the player of the year in Europe in 1956.

And the inaugural first ever winner was Stanley Matthews of Blackpool, in between 1956 till 1995 this award was only applicable to European born players only who plays with the European's clubs.

But in 1995, there was a change in the rules to allow non-European players to be eligible for the award if they played for a European club.

The first non-European to win after the rule change was Milan's George Weah from Liberia in the same year. He is becoming the first African players to received such honor from the European football bodies.

As a result, the number of journalists allowed to vote also increased; 96 journalists from around the world chose their top five players, as opposed to the 52 Europe based journalists in 2006.

Ever since the award had been introduce, there are 3 players who had won it for 3 times. They are  Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini, and Marco van Basten.

The only sole Arsenal player that had been nominated and voted for such highly honored award was Thierry Henry in 2003 where he was second behind Pavel Nedved from  Czech Republic who representing Juventus.

With more young players within Arsenal who one day will be one of the best players in the world, there is a bright chances for us to capture such award in future.

This will be not a hope as it is more towards of a facts that we do have few players who will be able to achieve it in future.

The best ever news that I have heard is when our Thierry Henry is back at the emirates. His arrival at Emirates are always being welcome and his respects for the clubs till now never put us all in any doubts that he would contribute something to our future success.

Henry spent his final two seasons with Arsenal as club captain, leading them to the UEFA Champions League final in 2006.

Even though his arrival was actually to train with Arsenal to improve his fitness ahead of the start of the MLS season, but at the same time he will spend most of his time to trains our strikers.

This is a great opportunity for our young players, especially Theo Walcott who had the similarity with Henry's past experience which saw him transforming becoming the greatest striker from actual wing position.

We missed him a lot after his transfer to Barca and ever since then we haven't found any of our recent strikers could be equivalent with his talent in the Arsenal squad.
